Season extension boost is good news for Lake District

A HOLIDAY parks company has received a landmark extension to the tourism season in the Lake District and will no longer have to turn away business during winter or Christmas.

South Lakeland Parks has won permission to keep its five-star Fallbarrow Park site at Bowness-on-Windermere, open for an extra six weeks between November and the end of January following an appeal to the Lake District National Park Authority.

Previously the five-star site, named one of the best in Britain this year, had to shut on November 14 and not re-open until March 1, meaning the company lost business and holiday home owners and visitors were effectively “banned,” for four months.

Graham Hodgson, Chief Executive of South Lakeland Parks, said: “We are highly delighted with this decision by the National Park because not only is it extremely good news for our company and our guests who will now be able to stay longer, it will also help provide a stream of income for local businesses around Windermere at a time of year when it is not as busy.”

“Being able to offer people the chance to spend Christmas and Winter in the Lake District will mean we can retain our staff in jobs for that much longer and ensure that more visitors come who help support local businesses such as pubs, restaurants, cinemas, local tourist attractions and shops.”

He added: “Tourism is vital to the Lake District all year round and not just businesses like ours but many others in the community. Until now, we were at a commercial disadvantage compared to other destinations in the country because winter and Christmas are popular times for a break.”
